Quilts for the homeless

There is a big need for quilts for the homeless; I have 'tons' of fabric that really doesn't lend itself to our other quilts.
Does anyone want to join me at my house to assemble the fabric into quilts?  Or I can provide 'kits' for you to assemble one at home.
I'm just sewing together pieces of fabric and finishing them by sewing on the backing and turning it inside out through an opening (with the batting encased.)  No binding necessary.

Send me a message if you can help!

November Block Lotto

Here it is, my final installment for block lotto. Cozy!

The block pattern is Mountain Majesty and the tutorial I followed is found HERE.

Please feel free to use any of the colors for either the peaks or valleys! The block finishes at 11.5"x14.5".

How to play: Make up the block for the month following the pattern and color scheme. Make as many as you want as you will get an entry for every block you make! Bring all your finished blocks to the meeting on November 13th and we will draw a winner. If there are enough blocks to be divided, multiple winners will be drawn. The winner then gets all of those blocks to make a quilt (or similar project)! The winner can participate in following lottos but can't win again until a completed project is presented.

Have fun!

October Block Lotto

This month's block palette is easy: black and white. Feel free to use a solid black or a print that is mostly black (tonal black on black would be great). Dark grey or charcoal would be fine, too. The background should be white.

The pattern is a an Old Maid's Puzzle variation (or School Girl's Puzzle) and the instructions can be found HERE.
*Edit: Follow cutting instructions for the 12" block, which actually gets you a 12.5" block.

How to play: Make up the block for the month following the pattern and color scheme. Make as many as you want as you will get an entry for every block you make! Bring all your finished blocks to the meeting on October 9th and we will draw a winner. If there are enough blocks to be divided, multiple winners will be drawn. The winner then gets all of those blocks to make a quilt (or similar project)! The winner can participate in following lottos but can't win again until a completed project is presented.

Quilt Con Charity challenge

Mad Modders,

At the September meeting I tested the waters for interest in our guild contributing a quilt to the Quilt Con challenge.  There was little or no interest expressed at that time.  If I am in error and there are people who would like to be part of a team working on this project, please notify me immediately.  The entrance forms are due September 30!

There are very specific guidelines as to colors, design, quilting density and size.  You can check the specifics on the national Modern Quilt site. The quilt would need to be completed around Thanksgiving as it needs to be sent on to Houston before the first of the year.

I'm putting on a big push to finish up a LOT of charity projects....at the October meeting, I'll be hoping for lots of volunteers to take home a quilt and quilt it!

The scraps are so deep that they are beginning to drift!

Charity @ Mad Mod

Greetings from Mad Mod Charity!  I hope that you have had a great summer; it will be fun to have us all together again.  If you have a little free time, please consider helping with one of these projects:

Quilts of Valor:
We still are in need of blocks for our Valor quilt.
15", divided on the diagonal....half white, half blue and red stripes.
Wonky stars would also be welcome.
I'd like to get this one finished up soon.

During the summer we started another type of block.  Any size, improv scrap block of white and off-white fabrics (solid or reading as solid) with a scrap or two of a bright solid in the block.

The "Not for the Faint of Heart" paper pieced umbrella:
I tried my hand at making a pattern; if you are experienced at paper piecing please take a try at this one!  I'll have the pattern and gray background fabric at the meeting.  Waiting in the wings, I have some cool raindrop fabric to use along with the umbrellas.
I fell in love with this fabric from Stitchers' Crossing!   It is now chopped into pieces....take home a chunk and make a cool block (any size) out of it.

As always, there will be superhero kits available at the meeting.  There will also be several superhero tops available for quilting.  These do not need to be elaborately quilted; the batt is Warm and White so the stitching can be widely spaced.  The completed ones are so much fun!

See you Thursday!!!!

September Block Lotto

Hello all! Here is The block information for September's Block lotto. Sweet as honey.

The pattern is Knee Socks by Elizabeth Hartman. The pattern can be found HERE.

The instructions produce a block that finishes at 24.5 inches (!). A little big, so the requirement for the lotto will be to make only one of the quadrants, which finish at 12.5 inches. You will make a small, medium, and large unit for each quadrant. These can then be assembled according to the quadrant diagrams (step 4). You can choose either the A, B, C, or D placement for your units. Please use white for the background fabric.

How to play: Make up the block for the month following the pattern and color scheme. Make as many as you want as you will get an entry for every block you make! Bring all your finished blocks to the meeting on September 11th and we will draw a winner. If there are enough blocks to be divided, multiple winners will be drawn. The winner then gets all of those blocks to make a quilt (or similar project)! The winner can participate in following lottos but can't win again until a completed project is presented.

Have fun!

July Block Lotto

Summer is in full swing and I've got July's block for you! Here is the color palette, a mix of classic reds and blues with some mint and yellow in for fun.

These are what I pulled from my stash. I couldn't find my box of pale mint green so I went with light blue instead. Please feel free to use white, too.

The block is Skinny Churn Dash and can be found HERE. There are several variations she shows, so if one of the other churn dash styles inspires you go for it! I think the variation would be fun. The blocks should finish around 12.5".

How to play: Make up the block for the month following the pattern and color scheme. Make as many as you want as you will get an entry for every block you make! Bring all your finished blocks to the meeting on July 10th and we will draw a winner. If there are enough blocks to be divided, multiple winners will be drawn. The winner then gets all of those blocks to make a quilt (or similar project)! The winner can participate in following lottos but can't win again until a completed project is presented.

June Block Lotto

I am so glad summer has finally arrived and I've got myself in a lake house (Or summer camp. Are there adult summer camps?) frame of mind. Pine needles and clear water. Paddling canoes and lounging on docks. Campfires and s'mores. This month's palette is called Lake Tones and it makes me think of all these things.

The block is Another Star Block and the pattern can be found HERE. I did mine with the greens around the center block and the points in brown but please feel free to mix it up however you want! This block finishes at 12.5 inches.

How to play: Make up the block for the month following the pattern and color scheme. Make as many as you want as you will get an entry for every block you make! Bring all your finished blocks to the meeting on June 12th and we will draw a winner. If there are enough blocks to be divided, multiple winners will be drawn. The winner then gets all of those blocks to make a quilt (or similar project)! The winner can participate in following lottos but can't win again until a completed project is presented.

May Block Lotto

The block for May's lotto is here! This month is a basket weave block from Moda Bakeshop.
We're going to keep this one truly scrappy and not have a color scheme, so just pull what you have from your stash or scrap bin!

The cutting instructions are for an entire quilt so here is what you need for one block:

White Background: (2) 4"x8"
Color Strips: All are 2.5" wide
                     (1) 8"
                     (2) 9.5"
                     (2) 11"
                     (1) 12.5"

How to play: Make up the block for the month following the pattern and color scheme. Make as many as you want as you will get an entry for every block you make! Bring all your finished blocks to the meeting on May 8th and we will draw a winner. If there are enough blocks to be divided, multiple winners will be drawn. The winner then gets all of those blocks to make a quilt (or similar project)! The winner can participate in following lottos but can't win again until a completed project is presented.

Have fun!

Events Position

I have an announcement for you all. Jennifer Falkowski is, unfortunately, stepping down from the second Events Coordinator position. This position is now open for all of our members to consider filling. The Events Coordinators are responsible for the following:
  • Regular activities such as swaps, challenges, block lotteries, block of the month, bees.
  • Social events such as sew days, field trips, and other social get-togethers.
  • Special events such as quilt shows, speakers, and workshops.
These are the aspects of a guild that make it fun and worth being a part of but it can be a little taxing for one person to plan all of these things out. Please consider joining with me as an Events Coordinator and help make our guild even better!

We would like to have this position filled as soon as possible so if you would like to run for it please leave a comment below, contact us on Facebook, or send and email. Hopefully we can elect someone at our next meeting, this Thursday. If you have an interest, please make it known before 5:00 pm Thursday, April 10th.

April Block Lotto

I've got April's block for you! This month is Rain or Shine and here is your color inspiration:

Basically we're going for blue and yellow here. Any shade of blue, any shade of yellow.

For the block itself we are going to be using our improvisational piecing skills. I know you've got 'em!

I made this block up so I'll give you a little tutorial.

The idea I'm going for are blue "raindrops" on a sunny background.

Start with some blue and yellow scraps or strips.

Piece them together until they are about 11-12" in length. Trim the edges up, making the width of the strips whatever you like. I varied mine and made sure they weren't smaller than 1.5" wide. You could also piece together a couple different strip sets and then chop them up at different widths for these pieces.

Now cut some strips of yellow that are about 11-12" long and sew them to the long edges of your pieced strips. These can be whatever width you like, also.

Trim and square up your block to be 10.5" and you are all set!

How to play: Make up the block for the month following the pattern and color scheme. Make as many as you want as you will get an entry for every block you make! Bring all your finished blocks to the meeting on April 10th and we will draw a winner. If there are enough blocks to be divided, multiple winners will be drawn. The winner then gets all of those blocks to make a quilt (or similar project)! The winner can participate in following lottos but can't win again until a completed project is presented.

Have fun!

MQG Michael Miller Fabric Challenge

The Modern Quilt Guild is holding its 4th annual members fabric challenge. This year Michael Miller Fabrics is sponsoring the event and is providing participating guilds with fabric. The collection is called Petal Pinwheels.

Guidelines per the MQG

  • The challenge runs from March 2014 toJune 23, 2014 to July 25th.
  • Winners announced July 8, 2014 August 1st
  • Members may make anything they want as long as it is quilted!
  • Add in any solid or Michael Miller printed fabric.
  • You do not need to use all the fabrics given to you.
  • Upload and share your photos to the Fabric Challenge Forum on the Community site.
  • MQGs can create guild specific challenges, as long as the other guidelines are upheld. *We will not have a specific challenge for the Mad Mod Quilt Guild. Feel free to make what you like!
  • Don’t forget to use the #mqgfabricchallenge on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter!
Three winners will be chosen by Michael Miller Fabrics. Each one will receive a posting on their blog and a year of free fabric- a goody box filled with fabric from their collections every month for a year!

The sign up for the fabric was due by the end of February. I based the number of participants on the number of paid members we had at the time, plus a few extra. This means we will only be getting enough fabric for 48-50 members. Hopefully the fabric will be arriving soon. I will keep you posted!

March Block Lotto

"Green is the prime color of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises." - Pedro Calderon de la Barca
I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I am ready for a change of seasons! I've got all things green in my thoughts including this month's block for the lotto.

Two palettes of lovely verdant tones.

The pattern this month is the Ribbon Star Block. This one is a smidge on the trickier side as there are quite a few pieces to keep track of and line up, but I know you can do it! The finished block is 12.5 inches. No restrictions on this block.

How to play: Make up the block for the month following the pattern and color scheme. Make as many as you want as you will get an entry for every block you make! Bring all your finished blocks to the meeting on March 13th and we will draw a winner. If there are enough blocks to be divided, multiple winners will be drawn. The winner then gets all of those blocks to make a quilt (or similar project)! You can't win again until a completed project is presented.

Is it time to makeover our branding?

Good Evening Mad Mod Quilters!

At the last meeting we discussed the idea of creating  new, updated branding.  We have had a SURGE in membership since our logo was first created and we've officially joined The Modern Quilt Guild so it might be time for a refresh.

We need a logo that is...
  • Re-sizable - so it can be made into a huge poster or tiny button.  A vector graphic would be ideal!
  • A .png option so the background is clear
Details...
  • You pick the color palette!
  • Multiple design submissions and color palettes are acceptable
  • A black and white option would be rad
  • We need a coordinating Blogger header, Facebook header, and blog button
  • We will not accept hand drawings.   We are not graphic designers and don't necessarily have the skills needed to translate your drawing into a computer graphic.   Please have a design ready to use on the internet.
  • Be original, we're not looking for another logo with the Capitol building in it.
Ideally, we'd like to see the submissions in person, presented by YOU at the May meeting.

You're welcome show sneak peaks of your ideas ahead of time by posting on our Modern Quilt Guild Community site or on our Facebook page.

If you are unable to attend the May meeting and have a design you'd like to submit please email a .pdf to madmodquiltguild@gmail.com by Monday May 5th.

Voting will only be done IN PERSON at our May Meeting.  Do you love the current logo? That will be an option on the ballot too.  We can't wait to see what YOU come up with!

Check out logo inspiration on Pinterest.

Happy quilting.
--Wendy

Charity blocks

Charity Quilt Blocks…..indeed , Mad Mod, it's the end of the road for many of our quilt blocks….please turn these in at the February meeting:

1. bright wonky stars on white, 8" or 15"
2.  pieced house on blue background, 15"
3. bright circle inset/appliqued on the given black and white checked block
4.  ugly fabric plus black improv 15"
5. made stripes, solid plus white 7.5" by 31"

Due at this meeting or March:
on the diagonal 1/2 white, 1/2 striped red, navy, royal  15" block
This is for quilts of valor and will be a larger quilt so we need more blocks…no metallic or juvenile

Ongoing:
14" superhero blocks made with kits handed out in January.  There are still more available

As alway remember guidelines:
*new, quilt-shop quality cotton
*no smoke or pet hair
*if possible, return scraps over 1" with the block
*have fun!

The 5 partially completed quilts that you saw in January are in various stages of quilting/binding!  We are awaiting a new logo so that labels can be made and then off they go!

See you Thursday!

February Sew Day!

Hang out and sew with your awesome Modern Quilt Guild peeps February 15th.
Our next member sew day will take place at Bungalow Quilting!

It's at 646 W. Fond du Lac Street, Ripon, Wisconsin 54971

There is room for 12 to fit comfortably so sign up early!

RSVP via email or on our Facebook page.

For Sew Days with limited space (like this one), RSVP is mandatory. Mad Mod Quilt Guild members will be given priority, then non-members/guests are welcome as space permits. Any remaining spots will be open to guests 3 days before the event.

Judy has ironing boards and irons and two Berninas if needed, but feel free to bring your own machines.

Room for fabric cutting is limited so you may want to bring something you're already working on. Little things, yes; a whole quilt, not so much. Just envision tight space and sharp cutting tools...shudder...

She's supplying lunch: BBQ sandwich fixings + veggies.

AND 20% off fabric during the sew day

It should be the social event of the season so we really hope you can make it.

Please make sure to RSVP

Tea Cozies, please!

The Monona Library is celebrating it's 50th year - woohoo!

They are having several events throughout the year.  One is a Downton Abbey themed tea party on April 27.

We are asking people to make tea cozies to auction off as a fundraiser for the library

Would any guild members be willing to make and donate a cozy?

Here is a simple and awesome pattern but anything that anyone would make would be appreciated.

Please, dress us up in cozies, we're cold!

Bring them to the Mad Mod Quilt Guild meeting OR Drop them off at the Monona Library (in care of Jen) up to April 20th.

Thanks!

February Block Lotto

Time for February's Block Lotto!

This month's palette is a frosty berry smoothie. Lilac, lavender, raspberry, blackberry, and orchid.

The block is called Patchwork Wheel and is available here.

When they are put together, an X's and O's pattern is formed giving a subtle Valentine's quilt.

A few notes for this quilt block:
  • Please use a light grey for the background/ corner fabrics. The circle effect is best achieved when this is a solid or very lightly patterned.
  • The pattern calls for using eight (8) 4.25" background squares with eight (8) 4.25" color squares. The method used for making the half square triangles results in 16 units. Only eight are needed per block. You could either use a different method for getting single half square triangle units or you could cut out another eight 3.5" purple squares and use the extra half square triangles to make an additional block!

How to play: Make up the block for the month following the pattern and color scheme. Make as many as you want as you will get an entry for every block you make! Bring all your finished blocks to the meeting on February 13th and we will draw a winner. If there are enough blocks to be divided, multiple winners will be drawn. The winner then gets all of those blocks to make a quilt (or similar project)! You can't win again until a completed project is presented.

Have fun!

If you did not receive any of this fabric, please feel free to join in by using any red and white fabric. There is no particular design required for this challenge. please bring your finished mini quilt to the meeting on February 13th. Can't wait to see them!
